Surgical Tech Training – Where Do I Get It And How Long Does It Take?

Where and how to complete a training program in order to become a professional surgical tech is going to vary on different factors. Mainly what your career goals are, what type of program you would like to complete, and where you end up getting your education. Some schools and career colleges offer degree programs only while other may also include certificate programs and/or a diploma program which may allow you to enter the medical field as a surgical technologist. How long it takes to finish your education in surgical technology will mainly depend on the school and program you choose. For instance a degree (associate) will likely take longer from start to completion then a certificate or diploma program. More specifically associate’s degrees generally take about 24 months to complete while certificate and/or diploma programs may take as little as 9 months up to 18 months or longer to finish. What Will I Have Learned After Completing A Surgical Technician Program?

For the specifics you need to check with each school and compare programs. But generally you may receive training in anesthesia, techniques used in surgical technology (i.e., the practices which may be used while assisting surgeons in the operating room), and surgical procedures to name a few. You will also likely learn skills such as how to provide direct patient care, how to prepare instruments to insure they are sterile, when and how to pass medical items such as equipment, supplies (e.g., sponges, needles), and instruments (e.g., retractors) to a surgeon, etc… You should also learn book knowledge that will be required such as surgical pharmacology, microbiology, anatomy, and others.

Where Do Surgical Techs Work?

Once you have completed your education from an accredited institution and finished up any certification that may be required chances are you will have a lot of different types of employers to consider while searching for jobs for entry level surgical techs just out of school. These include obviously hospitals, but other you may not have thought about include doctors offices, outpatient or surgery facilities, ambulance services, and others.

How Do I Get Started In Order To Get Trained To Become A Surgical Tech?

The first thing to do is to contact some school who offer courses in the surgical technology field of study. If you know for sure you want to be in a medical career, but are still uncertain if a surgical technologist school will be able to help you make, remember is costs you nothing to contact them and have them give you information. Plus chances are the schools you contact may have other related medical training programs such as respiratory therapy, radiography, orthopedic assistant, and degree or certificate programs available. Therefore if you decide that surgical technologist training is not for you, one of the other programs may be and you are already started in the process verses procrastinating and possibly missing the next start date. Some schools for surgical tech may run on a more traditional college semester system while others may start a course more often.
